Why I Trust Clinique
for Sensitive,
Allergy-Prone Skin

and the five products I actually recommend

August 30, 2026 5 min read

As an allergist, I get asked constantly which skincare brands I actually trust for patients with sensitive skin, eczema, or a history of allergic reactions. Clinique is almost always on my short list, and it's not because of clever marketing. It's because the brand was built, from day one, around the same principles I use in my own practice: test rigorously, avoid known irritants, and never guess.

A Brand Founded on Allergy Science

Clinique didn't start as a beauty company that later added a wellness angle. It started with a dermatologist. In 1968, Vogue asked New York dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich a simple question: can great skin actually be created? His answer became Clinique, the first major skincare line developed by a dermatologist and built specifically around allergy testing.

Orentreich wasn't just a skincare formulator. He was a serious researcher who studied autoimmune effects on skin, aging, and inflammatory skin conditions. That clinical mindset shaped how Clinique approached every formula from the start: decide what to leave out before deciding what to put in.

What "Allergy Tested" Actually Means Here

Clinique states that its formulas undergo rigorous allergy testing, with millions of test applications performed over the brand's history. Every product is also formulated without fragrance, and the line avoids parabens and phthalates. For patients who react to fragrance or common preservatives, that's not a small detail. It's often the difference between a product that soothes skin and one that triggers a flare.

Clinique has also continued investing in dermatology research well beyond its original launch, including a multi-year partnership with Mount Sinai focused on skin inflammation, eczema, atopic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis. That's the kind of ongoing clinical investment I like to see from a brand I recommend.

History and consistency matter more than a claim on a label.

Why This Matters for My Patients

I'll be honest with you: the terms "hypoallergenic" and "dermatologist tested" aren't strictly regulated by the FDA, which means they can mean very different things depending on the company using them. That's exactly why history and consistency matter so much when I'm choosing what to recommend. Clinique has held to the same allergy-testing, fragrance-free standard for over 55 years, across a huge product line, which is a much stronger track record than a brand making similar claims for the first time this year.

None of this means every Clinique product is right for every person. Sensitive skin is not one thing, and allergies are individual. But when I'm recommending a starting point for patients who react easily, Clinique's approach gives me a level of confidence that most drugstore or prestige lines simply haven't earned yet.

Fewer ingredients. Less to react to.

My Simple Regimen

With a brand this large, it's tempting to layer on product after product. But more steps means more chances for irritation, and most people do better with a small, consistent routine than a crowded shelf. Here are the five Clinique products I actually recommend, and why each one earns its place.

Step One

Extra Gentle Cleansing Foam

A cleanser that removes the day without stripping the skin barrier, formulated for very dry to dry combination skin. Shop the cleanser

Step Two

Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator

The hydration workhorse of the routine. Fragrance-free and built to keep skin comfortable through the day. Shop the hydrator

Step Three

Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream

Targets visible redness and irritation with probiotic technology, ideal for reactive or easily flushed skin. Shop the relief cream

Step Four

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ Broad Spectrum SPF 35

Daily moisture and sun protection in a single step, so sun care never becomes the product you skip. Shop the SPF 35

Step Five

All About Eyes Brightening Serum Concentrate

A gentle, targeted treatment for the eye area, one of the most sensitive and reactive areas of the face. Shop the eye serum

That's the whole routine. Cleanse, hydrate, calm, protect, and treat the eye area. Five steps, once a day, and nothing your skin has to fight to tolerate.

As always, patch test any new product, especially if you have a known allergy history, and talk to your own dermatologist or allergist about what's right for your skin. If you want the rest of my sensitive-skin picks, here's my full Lauren's Recommendations.
