Clinique is the brand people mention most when they ask me about sensitive skin. Its labels say allergy tested and 100% fragrance free. Here is what those claims mean, what they do not mean, and what to do if your skin still reacts.

Is Clinique allergy tested?

Yes. Clinique says that since the brand began, its formulas have gone through allergy testing, with nearly 6 million test applications to date. Every product carries the claim.

Allergy testing in skin care usually means a repeated patch test on a panel of about 100 to 200 volunteers. Patches go on the skin again and again over several weeks, then a final patch checks whether the immune system has learned to react. It catches strong allergens before a product ships. It cannot catch a rare reaction. That is true for every brand.

Is Clinique fragrance free?

Clinique says its products are 100% fragrance free. For sensitive skin, this is the claim I care about most.

Fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic skin reactions. Under US rules, a whole fragrance blend can be listed as one word, fragrance, so you cannot see what is in it. Taking fragrance out removes the biggest unknown.

Is Clinique hypoallergenic?

That word does less work than people think. In the United States, hypoallergenic has no federal definition. It means whatever a company wants it to mean. Allergy tested and fragrance free tell you more. I explain the full label in Does Hypoallergenic Mean Allergy Free?

Can you be allergic to Clinique?

Yes. Allergy tested and fragrance free lower the odds. They do not make a product allergy proof. Preservatives, plant extracts and active ingredients like retinol can still cause problems for some people.

It also helps to know which kind of reaction you are having.

IrritationAllergic reaction
How it feelsBurning, stinging, drynessItching
When it startsUsually soon after you apply itOften a day or more later
WhereWhere you applied itCan spread beyond that area
Common causesRetinol, acids, too much too oftenFragrance, preservatives, specific ingredients

Irritation from an active ingredient often settles if you use it less often. An allergy will not. If you keep reacting, patch testing by an allergist or dermatologist can find the exact ingredient, so you know what to avoid.

How to try any new skin care product

  1. One new product at a time. If you react, you will know which one it was.
  2. Test a small spot first. Try it on the inner arm or along the jaw for a few days.
  3. Start actives slowly. Retinol two or three nights a week, not every night.
  4. Read the ingredient list, even on a brand you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clinique allergy tested?

Yes. Clinique says all of its products are allergy tested, with nearly 6 million test applications to date. Allergy tested is a real screening step, but it cannot promise that no one will ever react.

Is Clinique fragrance free?

Clinique says its products are 100% fragrance free. Fragrance is one of the most common causes of allergic skin reactions, so this is the claim that matters most for sensitive skin.

Is Clinique hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic has no legal definition in the United States, so the word itself tells you little. Allergy tested and fragrance free are more useful things to look for, and you should still read the ingredient list.

Can you be allergic to Clinique?

Yes. Any product can cause a reaction in someone, including allergy tested and fragrance free products. Preservatives, botanical extracts and active ingredients can all cause problems for some people.

How do I know if a reaction is irritation or an allergy?

Irritation usually burns or stings soon after you apply a product and stays where you put it. An allergic reaction is usually itchy, often shows up a day or more later, and can spread beyond the area. Patch testing by an allergist or dermatologist can tell you for certain.
