Start here

Three words on the label. Only one is checkable.

Hypoallergenic

Not regulated

There is no standard behind it and no test a product has to pass. Any company can print it on anything. It is the word people trust most and the one that tells you least.

Unscented

Often misleading

A product can be unscented and still contain fragrance, added specifically to mask the smell of the other ingredients. If you react to fragrance, this word does not protect you.

Fragrance free

Checkable

It means none was added, and you can confirm it on the ingredient list. Together with "allergy tested," that is what I look for.

A note on how to use this. Nothing here treats a condition. If your skin is genuinely inflamed, or you have eczema or hives that are not controlled, that is a conversation with your own physician, not a shopping list.

What this list does is reduce what your skin has to deal with in the first place. Fewer irritants, less sun, less friction, fewer dust mites. That is unglamorous and it is most of the work.

Change one thing at a time. If everything changes at once and your skin improves, you have learned nothing about which change mattered.

Step one

Cover comes before cream

Sunscreen is the last line of defense, not the first. Fabric does not wear off at hour two, does not need reapplying, and does not depend on you using the right amount. Put cloth between you and the sun first, then use SPF for what the cloth does not reach.

Cadets

The everyday layer

Sun Shirt, UPF 50+

UPF 50+ means the fabric lets through about one fiftieth of the UV that reaches it. That rating does not wear off at hour two. Wet or stretched fabric protects less, so dry and loose beats soaked and tight.

The Endless Summer

The one for water

UPF 50+ Long Sleeve Hooded Sunshirt

The hood covers the back of the neck and the tops of the ears, which are the two places people miss every single time and the two places that matter most over decades.

Pact

The one to keep in a bag

Organic Cotton Packable Sun Hat

A brim shades the face, the ears, and the neck at once. Organic cotton with no wrinkle-resistant resin finish, which is worth knowing if your scalp or forehead reacts to new fabric.

Step two

The SPF you will actually wear

The best sunscreen is the one that is already in your moisturizer, because that is the step you will not skip on a rushed morning. All three of these are allergy tested and 100 percent fragrance free.

Clinique

Moisturizer and SPF in one

Moisture Surge Sheer Hydrator, SPF 28

Hydration and broad spectrum protection in a single step, which removes the excuse. Sheer enough to go under makeup without pilling.

The higher number

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion + SPF 35

The classic lotion with broad spectrum SPF 35 built in. If you are only going to own one daytime moisturizer, own this one.

For him

For Men Daily Hydrator, SPF 35

Same logic, lighter finish, and no fragrance to argue about. The men in your house are statistically the ones not wearing any sunscreen at all.

Step three

Hydrate the barrier you spent all summer stripping

Sun, salt, chlorine and sweat break down the layer that holds water in and keeps irritants out. That barrier repairs itself when you give it the raw material and stop stripping it. Hyaluronic acid pulls water in. Occlusives hold it there. Neither needs to be complicated.

Clinique

The workhorse

Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator

A gel cream that keeps working long past the moment you apply it. This is the one to use morning and night without thinking about it.

Clinique

The concentrate

Moisture Surge Hydrating Supercharged Concentrate

Hyaluronic acid does its job on damp skin, not dry. Apply it within a minute of washing, then seal it with whatever comes next.

For the eye area

All About Eyes Rich Eye Cream with Hyaluronic Acid

The skin around the eye is the thinnest on the body and the first place dehydration shows. Rich enough for overnight, calm enough for reactive skin.

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion

Fifty years old and still the reference point. Use it at night when you do not need the SPF version.

For everything below the jaw

Deep Comfort Body Moisture Cream

Chlorine and sun do not stop at the jawline, and neither should the routine. Apply to damp skin straight out of the shower.

When skin is reacting

Redness Solutions Daily Relief Cream

For the weeks when the barrier is genuinely angry and every active you own is making it worse. Fewer ingredients, less to react to.

The one active

Smart Night Clinical MD Repair Treatment, Retinol

Retinol at night, two nights a week to start, building up only if skin tolerates it. Give it twelve weeks before you judge it. Wear the SPF above, non-negotiably, while you use it.

Step four

Fabric is a treatment decision

Smooth fibers, no fragrance finishes, and nothing that traps heat. Overheating is one of the most reliable ways to make skin itch, which is why what you sleep in matters as much as what you put on. New clothes get washed before wearing, always.

Pact

The everyday piece

Organic Softspun Tee Dress

Organic cotton with no wrinkle or stain resin finish. Those finishes are a common cause of reactions to brand new clothing and almost nobody suspects them.

What to sleep in

Gisele TENCEL Modal Pajama Set

Modal is a fine, smooth fiber that moves heat away instead of holding it. If you wake up warm and itchy, this change does more than any cream will.

LAKE

The soft alternative

Dream Modal Kimono Pajama Set

Same fiber logic, different cut. A kimono style means no elastic waistband pressing on skin all night.

Haven Well Within

The layering trick

Washable Silk Camisole

Silk is the smoothest fiber there is against inflamed skin, and this one washes. Wear it under a wool blazer and you get to keep the blazer.

Step five

You spend a third of your life in this one room

If you are allergic to dust mites, the bed is where the exposure is. The interventions that hold up are unglamorous: a barrier between you and the mattress, a barrier between you and the pillow, and bedding you can wash hot without ruining. Every item here can be laundered.

Hygea Natural

The one that matters most

Dust Mite & Allergen Mattress Protector

A zippered encasement puts a physical barrier between you and the reservoir in the mattress. For anyone with a dust mite allergy this is the highest-value item on the page.

The other half

Dust Mite & Allergen Pillow Protectors, 2-Pack

The mattress encasement does half the job. Your face is on the pillow for eight hours. Do both or the effort is wasted.

Haven Well Within

For skin and hair

Washable Silk Pillowcase

Most silk pillowcases ask you to hand wash, which means they never get washed. This one goes in the machine, and washability is the whole point.

The sheets

Borderline Percale Sheet Set

Percale is a tight, flat weave that stays cool and takes a hot wash without falling apart. Crisp rather than clingy, which matters if you sleep warm.

The duvet

Lightweight Down Alternative Washable Duvet Insert

Down alternative you can put through your own machine. A comforter that only survives dry cleaning is a comforter that never gets cleaned.

Step six

The low-irritant house

The things around you all day matter more than the things you put on your face for ninety seconds. Air, humidity, and what you wash with are the three levers, and none of them are expensive.

Maisonette

The air

True HEPA Air Purifier

True HEPA, not HEPA-type. The second phrase has no standard behind it. Size the unit to the room and run it in the bedroom, where you spend the most consecutive hours.

Maisonette

The part people forget

Replacement HEPA Filter

A purifier nobody re-filters is a piece of furniture that hums. Buy the replacement at the same time as the machine and the swap actually happens.

Hyrion

The number to watch

Smart Temperature and Humidity Monitor

Dust mite populations collapse below roughly fifty percent relative humidity. Knowing your actual number is what turns the encasements and the washing into a strategy instead of a guess.

Dehumidifier for Home and Bedroom

This is how you move that number, and in a humid climate it is the difference between the rest of this list working and not.

The floors

A vacuum without a sealed HEPA system pulls allergen off the floor and sprays the fine fraction back into the air you are standing in.

The daily contact

Free & Clean Fragrance Free Hand Wash

Fragrance free means no fragrance. Unscented can mean a masking fragrance was added to cover a smell. They are not the same word and the label is not being careless by accident.
